How prediction markets work: a plain guide for Nigerians
Markets · 2026-10-15
A prediction market lets people take a position on whether a future event will happen. Instead of reading opinions, you see a price that reflects what participants collectively expect.
Odds and probability
Decimal odds show your total return per ₦1 staked. Odds of 2.00 return ₦2 for every ₦1 if you are right, which roughly implies a 50% chance. Lower odds mean the market sees the outcome as more likely.
Yes/No markets
Many markets ask a single question, for example whether an official figure will be above a level by a set date. You pick YES or NO; your odds are locked the moment you place the ticket.
Settlement
A market settles only from an official, verifiable source after the event. On Avalon, results, payouts and balances are decided by the backend, never by the app on your phone.
Stake responsibly
Only stake money you can afford to lose. Treat every position as a risk, not income.
